THOUSANDS ATTEND CASH FOR COLLEGE CONVENTION
The Chamber, UNITE-LA and other local Cash for College partners presented $40,000 in scholarships to local students, above, during the 11th annual College & Career Convention at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Wednesday and Thursday. The event drew more than 10,000 middle and high school and college students throughout L.A. who were in search of not only instant scholarship prizes, but access to financial aid experts that shared information on how to access state, federal and private resources to pay for college. L.A. City Council approves Chamber-supported Farmers Field
 Last Friday the L.A. City Council gave final approval to the environmental impact report documents for Farmers Field. On Wednesday, the Chamber participated in a signing ceremony in front of the convention center wing that will be replaced under the project proposal. "There were eight steps to get Farmers Field, this is number seven," said Anschutz Entertainment Group President & CEO Tim Leiweke. "Now we will get an NFL team." Emerging Commerce Council holds Tech Salon panel
 In the Emerging Commerce Council's first "Tech Salon Series" on Monday, a panel of website entrepreneurs shared their success in raising capital and thriving in Los Angeles. Panelists discussed their start-up stories, the environment in Los Angeles for the tech community and how they specifically had gone about pursuing funding as entrepreneurs. "I truly believe that first money should come from your community," said Eva Ho, VP of communications and marketing of Factual, a software platform for application developers. Mobility 21 honors leaders in transportation
 Last Friday, Mobility 21 held its 11th annual transportation summit at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. "You are the example of what we should be doing around the country," said Rep. Bill Shuster, a member of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, praising the work of Mobility 21. Awards were presented to Sen. Barbara Boxer, chair of the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee, for her work in passing the surface transportation reauthorization; Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for his efforts to accelerate transit projects and America Fast Forward; and California Transportation Commission member Fran Inman, Majestic Realty Co., for her work as a private sector leader. Chamber pushes for non-exclusive wastehaul system
Last Friday, the Chamber testified at the L.A. City Council's Neighborhood & Education Committee in support of a non-exclusive wastehaul system, which would allow any hauler who meets a specific set of criteria to operate within the City. Last month, the City's Energy & Environment Committee recommended to the full Council to adopt an exclusive franchise that would give the City the power to select your hauler. Neighborhood Committee Chair Bernard Parks recommended that the full Council consider the CAO report recommending a non-exclusive system when the issue is before them. This summer, Walmart Stores, Inc. associates volunteered their time to stuff 2,500 backpacks full of school supplies to be given out to students at each of the 32 parks participating in the City of L.A.'s Summer Night Lights program. This was Walmart's second year in a row participating with Summer Night Lights, a nationally recognized violence reduction campaign that helps keep parks open after dark on warm, long summer nights.
