Chamber helps rescue $33 million for schools
 The Chamber joined Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles Unified School District, United Teachers/Los Angeles and other key partners to rescue $33 million in state funding to reduce class sizes and hire counselors for 6,600 students attending nine schools in some of the most underserved communities in California. “This important precedent-setting decision means funding will follow our students and not get trapped in the bureaucracy,” said Mayor Villaraigosa. Global Initiatives Committee highlights 2009 projects
 The Chamber’s Global Initiatives Committee met Wednesday to discuss key initiatives and goals for the year. Projects include the 2010 World Trade Fair, led by Norman Arikawa, Port of Los Angeles and a Trade Commissioners Networking Group, led by Vanessa Pereda, The Boeing Co. Elizabeth Glynn, UCLA Extension, discussed her project to create better education strategies for local exporters through a series of Global Education Strategies. Leadership L.A. Class of 2009 announced
A new group of community leaders is poised to take on the issues and trends shaping Los Angeles city and county through the Southern California Leadership Network’s Leadership L.A. program that began on March 13. The Class of 2009 Fellows
are 40 mid- to senior-level executives in the business, government and nonprofit sectors from across Los Angeles County. They will tackle issues including health care, education and workforce development, public safety and neighborhood development, while honing their civic entrepreneurship skills and forming close bonds with classmates and other leaders they encounter. Providence Holy Cross gets council okay to finish expansion
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center successfully urged the L.A. City Council to reaffirm their 2007 approval of the new four-story patient care wing, which would add 136 beds. "This isn't just a great day for Providence Holy Cross, it's a big victory for our entire community," said Kerry Carmody, Chief Operating Officer, Providence Health & Services, California region. American Apparel's profit increases 30 percent
Los Angeles-based manufacturer and retailer American Apparel recently announced that fourth-quarter net income jumped 30 percent as same-store sales grew.
