TRANSPORTATION NEXT: NEW ERA, NEW VISION, NEW REALITIES

More than 1,000 transportation, business and civic leaders gathered on Tuesday at the JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE for Mobility 21's 10th Annual Transportation Summit. The focus of the summit this year was on strategies for securing U.S. dollars to create local jobs and a push to prevent the federal gas tax — 18 cents per gallon — from expiring at the end of the month. If it expires, a significant amount of federal funding for transportation will go with it. Attendees also heard from keynote speaker Ed Rendell, above, former governor of Pennsylvania and co-chair of Building America's Future, on the importance of infrastructure spending. "There is no better job creator than infrastructure spending," said Rendell. (Photo by ImageActive) View photo gallery

Beacon Economics to Chamber: economy is picking up speed
The U.S. economy is in healing mode and there are no leading indicators that point to a double dip in the economy, said Economist Chris Thornberg, Beacon Economics, at a special economic briefing on Wednesday at the Chamber. While California faces economic challenges, said Thornberg, left, the biggest issue facing the State is the cost of housing. "We need to start thinking about how to make housing affordable," he said. Chamber supports package of bills that will reduce business costs in California
The Chamber applauds Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg and Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez on their legislation to reform California's regulatory system. SB 617 calls for regulatory reform to help lure businesses to California. AB 29 calls for an Office of Economic Development. "Regulatory reform is key to attracting more businesses to California and growing our existing businesses," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. "The SB 617 and AB 29 package is a great first step in reducing business costs and making California more business friendly." Contact P. Anthony Thomas, 213.580.7568.

Chamber to hear from former Lakers Star Jerry West
Sports icon Jerry West — 14-time NBA All-Star — will be at the Chamber on Monday, Sept. 12, 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. for the Occidental Petroleum Power Hour Series. West, left, led the Los Angeles Lakers to basketball dominance during the last quarter of the 20th century, first as head coach and later as general manager and executive vice president. In 2009, West was named executive director of the Northern Trust Open. In this role, West is working to raise the profile and charitable impact of one of the most storied events on the PGA TOUR schedule. Register now or contact Pat Clark, 213.580.7595.
