HOME FOR GOOD TESTIFIES BEFORE SELECT COMMITTEE ON HOMELESSNESS

The Business Leaders Task Force on Homelessness Co-chairs Jerry Neuman, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP, and Renee Fraser, Fraser Communications, testified this week at the States Select Committee on Homelessness special hearing in Los Angeles. Assemblymember Toni Atkins, chair of the Committee, and Assembly Speaker John Perez heard about the efforts Los Angeles is making in aligning their goals with our Home For Good plan as well as what the State can do to support this work. Neuman and Fraser highlighted the Task Force's accomplishments to date. Home For Good has made tremendous progress this year and is at 46 percent toward the goal of housing chronically homeless this year and 43 percent of housing homeless veterans. Above, from left, Neuman, Fraser and Chamber Board Member Elise Buik, United Way of Greater Los Angeles. Contact Beverly Kenworthy, 213.580.7531.

Chamber testifies in support of a public-private partnership structure for the L.A. Zoo

Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben testified Thursday in support of the L.A. City Administrator's Office proposal to issue a request for proposals (RFP) to find an alternative management structure for the Los Angeles Zoo. L.A. City Council will vote on the plan Aug. 12. The structure would be based on a public-private partnership, with a society or non-profit organization in charge of operations and policy setting. The local government will continue to own the assets, such as grounds and building. The plan will provide the zoo with the flexibility to utilize new earned revenue sources and more private sector fundraising. This means more revenue to operate and market the zoo, rather than streamlining through cuts. This business model, Toebben testified, will permit the zoo to fully reach its potential as a civic institution that adds greatly to the quality of life in Los Angeles. Chamber discusses draft AQMD Energy Policy
The Chamber hosted representatives from the South Coast Air Quality Management District on Thursday for a public hearing on the proposed draft AQMD Energy Policy. Chamber members and members of public and environmental groups discussed how this policy would affect the business community, the definition of specific terms in the draft and what to expect from the upcoming socioeconomic analysis. This was the second of four public hearings before the policy document goes before the AQMD Governing Board on Sept. 9. From left, Elaine Chang, deputy executive officer of Planning, Rule Development & Area Sources, and Barbara Baird, district counsel. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

Leadership Southern California wraps up 10-month leadership fellowship
Northern California’s Bay Delta is critical to water delivery across California, with some regions 100 percent dependent on it, said Chamber Board Member Gilbert Ivey, Metropolitan Water District, as he described the current infrastructure and political challenges surrounding the Delta at a Leadership Southern California 2011 seminar on Friday. More than 40 fellows — who graduated on Tuesday — completed their 10-month leadership fellowship with an in-depth look at both natural resources sustainability and disaster preparedness in Southern California. Leadership Southern California 2012 is now accepting applications through Aug. 22. Apply now or contact April Tam, 213.580.7524.
