OVERHEARD

"We need you guys to be doing exactly what you're doing. We need you to be thinking about how to improve the economy of California. This state has phenomenal assets, but we can do a lot better. The real work needs to be done in the trenches. It's the little things that make the system better ... that's where you're going to make a difference."

Christopher Thornberg, economist with Beacon Economics at the Chamber's Economy & Infrastructure Council meeting Tuesday.

Chamber participates in events highlighting homelessness in Los Angeles
Chamber Board Member Jerry Neuman, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP, and co-chair of the Business Leaders Task Force on Homelessness, recently spoke to KPPC radio host Pat Morrison on her two part series "Why is Los Angeles Still the Homeless Capital of America?" Neuman spoke about the Home For Good Plan and how Los Angeles can end chronic and veteran homelessness by 2016. Chamber staff joined the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority 2011 Homeless Count, "They Count, Will You?" Wednesday night. Every two years, volunteers cover more than 4,000 square miles of Los Angeles County, counting our neighbors living on the streets and in cars. This is a crucial endeavor for Los Angeles in receiving the necessary funding from the federal government to provide the necessary services and housing for our region's homeless. Chamber meets with new director of Department of Health Services
Dr. Mitchell Katz, the newly-appointed director of L.A. County's Department of Health Services, recently discussed issues he's ready to tackle, including homelessness and the reopening of Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital. Katz was the guest speaker at the Chamber's Health Care Council lunch this week at The California Endowment. The meeting was a partnership with LA Health Action. "The way to end homelessness is permanent supportive housing. As long as you focus on those who are costing your system the most, you'll save money," Katz said. The Chamber will work closely with Katz to help strengthen the County's health care safety net and network of emergency services. Contact Samuel Garrison, 213.580.7568.
