CHAMBER-SUPPORTED PROJECT TO BE REVIEWED BY L.A. COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

- Chinatown Walmart appeal denied
On Wednesday, the Chamber testified at the Central Area Planning Commission, asking that Walmart's permits for its Chinatown location be upheld and that the appeal filed by the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance be denied. The appeal had been rejected by the L.A. Zoning Administrator in late 2012. The Commission voted 3-2 to uphold Walmart's permits. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.
- Cap and Trade hearing
On Wednesday at a California Air Resources Board public workshop, the Chamber provided input on the development of an investment plan for the auction proceeds from the Cap-and-Trade program to reduce greenhouse gases. The Chamber advocated that proceeds be used to help entities subject to the program meet their goals, investments should help offset increased energy costs and the importance of directing funds to the transportation and goods movement sector. - Determining the future of digital billboards
The Chamber is a participating member of the City of L.A.'s Billboard and Visual Landscape Visioning Work Group, which will help determine the future of digital billboards in the City. The group, selected by the Department of Planning, will guide the direction and provisions of a possible program allowing digital billboards to locate outside of sign districts in exchange for a reduction of overall billboards and public benefits. - LA n Sync launches
On Thursday, LA n Sync, an organization that will help obtain money for L.A. through public-private collaboration, launched. Leadership Southern California explores land use, housing and transportation
On Friday, Leadership Southern California 2013
heard from local leaders on how they are tackling transportation and land use issues in our region. "As Hollywood transitions into getting more commercial tenants, more parking spaces will be needed," said Marcel Porras, legislative deputy to Councilmember Eric Garcetti, on the dilemmas of Los Angeles' public transportation system. Chamber co-organizes and participates in UCLA Anderson Export Champions seminar
 The half-day seminar on Wednesday included briefings about California competitiveness and challenges in global markets. The UCLA Anderson Global Access Program, now in its 15th year with more than 450 MBA/client company projects, was showcased as a vehicle to develop successful export business plans. "The biggest challenge for small companies is not realizing the business opportunities in foreign markets," said Jonathan Watson, director of international sales, Alvarado Mfg. Co., Inc.
