OVERHEARDs

"It's not going to be a 'some kids' agenda inside LAUSD, it's an 'all kids' agenda. Students and parents have the right to have high quality options. If that's in the form of a traditional school, great. If that's in the form of a charter school, let's get out of their way.”

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy at the Chamber's Board of Directors meeting last Thursday.

"You are doing what Americans have been doing for 300 years — growing your business through innovation. Your companies exemplify the connection between environmental preservation and economic development”

CREATING JOBS, ALLEVIATING CONGESTION AND IMPROVING AIR QUALITY

The Chamber applauds the California Public Utilities Commission for recently authorizing the Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority to construct 16 new at-grade and 11 grade-separated highway-light rail transit crossings as part of the Exposition Corridor Light Rail Transit Project-Phase 2 located in Los Angeles and Santa Monica. When completed, the Expo Project will extend from downtown Los Angeles to the City of Santa Monica for a total of 15.2 miles, creating jobs, helping to alleviate congestion and improving air quality. Expo Phase 2 is one of the 12 public transit projects that could be accelerated through the America Fast Forward program, which the Chamber supports. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

L.A. Jobs PAC to endorse Joe Buscaino for L.A. City Council District 15 on Friday
This Friday, L.A. Jobs Political Action Committee (PAC) is hosting an endorsement breakfast for L.A. City Council District 15 Candidate Joe Buscaino, at left. The L.A. Jobs PAC is sponsored by the Chamber and governed by an independent Board of Directors. L.A. Jobs PAC aims to elect candidates who will place a top priority on job creation, business investment and fiscal solvency. The L.A. Jobs PAC cited the need to create jobs and bolster public safety as the best strategies to improving the City's economic climate, and acknowledged that Buscaino has the skills and drive to accomplish these goals.
The breakfast on Friday, which is not a fundraiser, is open to a limited number of Chamber members. If you would like to attend, contact Ellie Ramseyer, 213.580.7596.

Chamber testifies in support of Southern California International Gateway
On Wednesday, the Chamber testified in support of the draft EIR for BNSF Railway Company's Southern California International Gateway (SCIG) project. This project will create 22,000 direct and indirect jobs, reduce trucks on the freeways and increase the use of the Alameda Corridor, all while cleaning up the current site, improving the health risk of neighboring residents and removing thousands of pounds of CO2 from the basin's air. The SCIG will also help maintain competitiveness, moving the region one step closer to preparation for the opening of the widened Panama Canal in 2014. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

Chamber testifies in support of the business tax holiday extension
As the City of Los Angeles works to develop an implementation plan to eliminate the gross receipts tax, L.A. City Councilmembers on Wednesday unanimously approved a three-year extension of the business tax holiday for new businesses in Los Angeles. While the plan is temporary, the goal of the holiday is to continue to attract new business in Los Angeles and confirm the City's committment to eliminating the gross receipts tax that is unfair to all businesses. Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital celebrates centennial anniversary
Los Angeles Orthopaedic Hospital (LAOH) recently celebrated its centennial anniversary and honored James V. Luck, Jr., M.D. at a gala fundraising dinner in Santa Monica. Among the several hundred guests were Meyer and Renee Luskin, generous benefactors to both UCLA and LAOH. "Jim Luck has helped thousands of children and adults, and has inspired me to the beauty of helping our fellow human beings," said Meyer Luskin of Dr. Luck, who stepped down as LAOH's president and chief executive officer in October. Opportunities for careers in international trade

University of Southern California Marshall School of Business Dean James Ellis, above, discussed the entrepreneurial challenges in the global world that await students once they graduate from school at the Global Initiatives Council Wednesday. "Every single trend, as negative as they are, provides the opportunity for our business leaders to capitalize and turn them around," Ellis said. The importance of careers in international trade was also highlighted this week when the World Trade Week Education Committee, in partnership with the Los Angeles World Airports, hosted an event at the Flight Path Learning Center on Monday for high school educators and counselors from numerous public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District and other regional school districts. Counselors were introduced to occupations and job opportunities related to the field of international trade and business — ranging from logistics and transportation to specialized fields in global management.
