Chamber's L.A. Cash for College program receives Overcoming Barriers Award

The Chamber's L.A. Cash for College (LACFC) program team received the Overcoming Barriers Award this week from the National College Access Network and the Kresge Foundation. LACFC received the award, along with a $25,000 prize, for their work in furthering Free Application for Federal Student Aid completion in local communities and their support of undocumented students. The LACFC team will continue to empower L.A. area students to seek funding for higher education at their 16th Annual College & Career Convention, Oct. 13-14. To volunteer at the event, CLICK HERE

 
L.A. officially awarded 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games by IOC

Wednesday, during the host-city selection ceremony in Lima, Peru, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially awarded the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games to L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti was in attendance to sign the host-city contract. A Chamber and LA 2028 commissioned Loyola Marymount University survey showed an overwhelming majority, 83 percent of L.A. residents, want L.A. to host the games, with 54 percent in "strong" support. LEARN MORE.
 
Follow-up Pro-Housing Discussion pushes shared housing action agenda forward

Following the successful Pro-Housing Convening in July, the Chamber was proud to participate in the Pro-Housing Discussion and Next Steps luncheon on Tuesday. Attendees represented diverse facets of housing, including academic, industry professionals, and housing advocates, collaborating on fair and effective policies and next steps for more housing.
 
Port of Los Angeles and Chamber discuss 2017 CAAP update

The Port of Los Angeles joined the Chamber's Transportation & Goods Movement Council Tuesday for an overview of the proposed 2017 Clean Air Action Plan update. Port officials discussed costs, benefits and next steps for the plan, as it sets goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 80 percent below by 2050. SEE THE PRESENTATION.
 
 
Chick-Fil-A expands presence in L.A. with plans for new downtown location
 
Chamber member Chick-Fil-A has become an institution in the L.A. region. The popular fast-food chain will soon become part of the resurgence of downtown L.A. when it opens its first downtown location in 2018. Franchise Owner and current Leadership L.A. fellow Ashley Derby will be at the helm of the new restaurant. Derby opened L.A.'s first Chick-Fil-A at the University of Southern California in 2010. LEARN MORE.

Join the Chamber's Bixel Exchange and other Startup Weekend organizers in downtown L.A. Sept. 29 - Oct. 1 for National Startup Weekend Latinx in Tech! The event will bring 500 Latinx and Latinx allies together for 54 hours in five cities across the U.S. to create tech solutions to the problems affecting the Latinx community. Our Week 21 30-in-30 honoree is State Senator Ricardo Lara, a 2007 graduate of Leadership L.A. Sen. Lara made history in 2012 by becoming the first openly gay person of color elected to the California Senate. Chamber co-hosts Mexico City Officials
 
The Chamber, in partnership with the Mexico City Initiative, hosted a delegation representing private and public entities from Mexico City last Friday. Former Mayor of Mexico City Cuauhtemoc Cardenas and current Director General of International Affairs represented Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera. The luncheon highlighted the strong cultural, commercial and educational ties between L.A. and Mexico City. SEE THE PHOTOS.
Chamber applauds preliminary LAUSD graduation rate gains
 
Earlier this week, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Michelle King announced preliminary high school graduation rates that hit 80.2 percent for the 2016-2017 school year -- a three-point gain from last year. David Rattray, executive vice president of the Chamber's Center for Educational Excellence and Talent Development, noted, "These students' success will have a direct impact on developing the future workforce, closing the skills gap and growing our economy. We are committed to partnering with the district and the L.A. community to continue to move the needle on high school graduation and A-G completion rates." READ FULL STATEMENT.
LARExC discusses future partnerships with Vietnam Ambassador
 
The Los Angeles Regional Export Council (LARExC) met with H.E. Pham Quang Vinh, Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. last week to discuss plans for a concrete partnership with several regions in Vietnam. The Ambassador was accompanied by several Embassy officials, who welcomed the opportunity to connect with several members of the Los Angeles business community. As an affiliate of the Chamber, LARExC encourages and assists businesses as they look to begin or increase trade activity.
