CHAMBER APPLAUDS CONGRESS ON HISTORIC TRANSPORTATION LEGISLATION
On Wednesday, the Senate and House struck a bipartisan deal to combine transportation reauthorization, student loan and flood insurance legislation into a package expected to pass by the end of the week. "The idea of America Fast Forward started right here in Los Angeles, and yesterday’s deal signals a huge win for L.A. County, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and our private and public coalition partners," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. The Chamber organized a coalition of chambers of commerce across the nation to support the bill. The two-and-a-half year transportation reauthorization and the inclusion of America Fast Forward was the top priority of the Chamber's ACCESS Washington, D.C. trip earlier this year. Chamber participates in Panama Canal competitiveness hearing
 On Tuesday, the Chamber participated in an L.A. City Hall hearing focused on ensuring the Port of Los Angeles is prepared for the opening of the widened Panama Canal in 2014. The City Council heard from the port, business, labor and environmental groups on ways the City can support and improve our competitiveness in the movement of international goods. Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben urged the Council to "adopt a transparent and predictable process for acting on Port Environmenal Impact Reports so that the City and private sector can work together on investing in projects to modernize the Port." Chamber connects employers with qualified candidates
 The Chamber is currently helping employers find qualified job seekers by hosting job fairs at the Chamber building. On Tuesday, representatives from the Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza interviewed 48 candidates for positions in housekeeping and valet. Previously, the Chamber helped connect 400 job seekers with human resources representatives from Vons, a Safeway Company for cashier, cake decorating and administrative positions. Chinatown celebrates construction of Walmart Neighborhood Market
 On Tuesday, the Chamber joined Chinatown residents, small business owners and community leaders to celebrate construction activities at the planned Walmart Neighborhood Market in downtown Los Angeles. The Walmart store, which will replace a retail space that has been vacant for more than two decades, will employ 65 people and create more than 25 temporary construction jobs. "The residents of Chinatown were promised and have been waiting for a grocery store in that location for more than 20 years. Metro Board approves AB 1446
Today the Metro Board of Directors voted to support Chamber-supported AB 1446, which would give Metro the authority to ask voters to extend Measure R to accelerate transportation projects. The Chamber testified in support of the bill, which will be in the state Senate Government & Finance Committee next week. The Board also approved the expenditure plan for the extension, but capped the tax at another 30 years instead of indefinite. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.
Land Use, Construction & Housing Council discusses CEQA
On Wednesday, the Chamber's Land Use, Housing and Construction Council engaged in a discussion on the efforts of groups statewide to modernize the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The Council also heard from representatives of the Chamber's CEQA Task Force on a recent Silicon Valley bus tour that highlighted problems with CEQA and discussed the organization of a Los Angeles bus tour for later this summer.
