Chamber caps off successful trade mission to South Korea
The Chamber capped off a successful trade mission to South Korea Wednesday by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) in Seoul.  As part of the trip, the Chamber joined Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and 35 trade delegates representing 23 companies in meeting with Korean business leaders. The goal was to create jobs through exports of California products and services, and by attracting Korean investment in California. Chamber-advocated small business tax incentives receive U.S. Senate approval
Today, after much legislative uncertainty, the U.S. Senate passed the small business stimulus package, which provides $12 billion in tax incentives and a $30 billion small business lending program. The Chamber supported both components and urged lawmakers to approve the package prior to the election recess. The legislation is now before the House of Representatives, where it is expected to be approved quickly. Contact Samuel Garrison, 213.580.7595.

Ports & Airports: keeping Southern California globally competitive
The Leadership L.A. Class of 2010 visited Los Angeles International Airport and the Port of Los Angeles on Friday, Sept. 10 to gain a better understanding of how this critical infrastructure connects our region to the world. The class spoke with Los Angeles World Airports COO Stephen Martin, and received a guided airfield tour of LAX operations and new construction, Fellows discussed security challenges faced by law enforcement at the port and airport. "Information-sharing was siloed between local, state and federal agencies before the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks," said Chief Ron Boyd, Port of Los Angeles Police. "Now we are better partners and our communication is much improved." Port of L.A. Deputy Executive Director Molly Campbell (SCLN Board Member and LSC '96), spoke on the need to grow America's port, keeping in mind local environmental concerns. Read more on Twitter @SCLN. Help LAUSD recover its students
Plan to join the Chamber on Friday, Sept. 24 as we partner with the Los Angeles Community Development Department, Office of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Los Angeles Unified School District for Student Recovery Day.  Volunteers are now being recruited to conduct home visits and make phone calls to students identified as chronic truants and high school dropouts.  Volunteers will encourage students to return to school on the day of the event to register and seek City and LAUSD services.  Contact Alma Salazar, 213.580.7566.
