"I am invited to every city in the world to present my solar film technology and discuss collaboration. Some cities have been waiting patiently for two years for me to come. In Los Angeles, I can't even get meetings, not to affiliate, collaborate or anything else. Los Angeles is conspicuously absent on the global green technology platform. When, the fact is, Los Angeles actually has all the elements to be on the forefront of clean tech."
—-Woolas Hsieh, president and founder of Solarmer, which produces flexible, plastic solar panel technology, at the Environmental Sustainability Council meeting Friday.

AMERICA FAST FORWARD MAKES A MOVE
The Chamber applauds the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee for moving forward with the reauthorization of the transportation funding bill. "Their specific support of America Fast Forward will move local transportation projects funded by Measure R forward at a much faster pace if approved by Congress and signed by President Obama," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. "The 165-member delegation from L.A. County that touted America Fast Forward as part of Los Angeles on the Hill — ACCESS Washington, D.C. three weeks ago did a great job in reinforcing the importance of America Fast Forward." The America Fast Forward program will leverage existing private and local commitments to accelerate the financing of infrastructure projects and contribute to significantly increased jobs and Federal, state and local revenues. The Chamber has been a strong proponent for America Fast Forward, known locally as 30/10. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558.

Chamber supports pension legislation, AB 340
AB 340, authored by Assemblymember Warren Furutani, would begin to put in place important reforms of California’s broken public pension system. This bill gives retirement boards permission to call out and identify suspicious pension enhancement practices, an authority they currently do not hold. "We strongly encourage all members of the State Senate to support AB 340 as an important first step in reforming our state’s public pension systems," said Board Chair Joseph Czyzyk, Mercury Air Group, Inc. Chamber supports creation of department of Economic Development
Chamber President & CEO Gary Teobben testified this week before the California Senate Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations in support of a new Department of Economic Development for the state of California. Toebben noted that California is one of the few states not to have such an agency. California eliminated its Department of Commerce in 2004. Contact Beverly Kenworthy, 213.580.7531.
Chamber meets with Senate President pro Tem Steinberg on education issues
Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg discussed the importance of connecting education and the economy to ensure that the State has the 21st Century workforce it needs to stay competitive at the Accenture Pancakes & Politics Breakfast Speaker Series on Friday. In efforts to increase California’s graduation rates, Steinberg introduced a bill package (SB 547, 611 and 612) that seeks to connect rigor and relevance to help students become more engaged, similar to Linked Learning. "I cannot think of a more important agenda than connecting education with workforce," he said. "We must connect the dots and integrate rigor and relevance." Contact Sonia Campos-Rivera, 213.580.7538.
