CHAMBER WELCOMES PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHILE AND CHILEAN TRADE DELEGATION. In his first presidential visit to Los Angeles, President of the Republic of Chile Sebastian Piñera E. joined the L.A. Area Chamber, various trade representatives and hundreds of local business leaders for a roundtable discussion about trade opportunities between California and Chile. President Piñera — joined by key trade representatives from Chile including Minister of Agriculture Jose Antonio Galilea, Minister of Economy Juan Andres Fontaine and Minister of Culture Luciano Cruz Coke — highlighted Chile's recent economic strides and openness to global trade. After his remarks, business leaders had a chance to meet with trade representatives from Chile during breakout sessions that focused on agribusiness partnerships, innovation and building bridges between Chile and Hollywood. President Piñera used the event as a platform to officially launch the Chile-California Council, which will promote, support and provide guidance to public and private Chilean initiatives to be developed in California. California-South Korea: Globalizing Trade & Investment
 Nearly 40 business executives representing more than 20 California companies, including representatives from the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach joined the L.A. Area Chamber and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on a three-day trade mission to South Korea to promote trade and investment, market California agriculture, encourage tourism and discuss high speed rail.
Mission highlights:
Gov. Schwarzenegger met with Hanjin International Corporation and Korean Air, working with California’s AC Martin Partners and Thomas Property Group, Inc., to announce investment in California in the form of the redevelopment of the Wilshire Hotel and Center. This project will result in $1 billion direct investment in Los Angeles, and will create 7,000 construction jobs and another 5,000 construction-related jobs for the City. Projections indicate that more than 4,000 permanent, onsite jobs will be created. It is estimated that $20 million in annual tax revenue to the City of L.A. will be generated. “There are new jobs, today, here in Los Angeles which are a direct result of the Governor’s enthusiastic visit to Korea; these jobs did not exist two weeks ago. These new jobs are in the development, architecture, engineering and construction fields, which have been so heavily impacted by this devastating recession. The L.A. Area Chamber leveraged the Asia trade mission to bolster trade opportunities for California by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Korea International Trade Association (KITA) to promote trade and investment between the two regions. As part of the agreement, the L.A. Area Chamber and KITA will encourage, promote and organize trade missions, matchmaking, and networking opportunities for businesses based in Los Angeles and Seoul. “This MOU serves to promote trade between the L.A. region and Seoul,” said L.A. Area Chamber Senior Vice President of Global Initiatives, Carlos Valderrama. “In order to create jobs and improve our economy in Los Angeles, we must embrace all international trade opportunities such as this one.” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other officials from California were on hand to witness the signing of the MOU. This partnership with KITA serves as another important addition to the Chamber's strategic alliances, which also include the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce, AmCham Chile, AmCham Peru, the High Council of Chambers of Commerce of Spain, KITA U.S. and the Consejo Empresarial Mexicano.
