Committed to serving those who served us
Chamber member Operation Confidence has provided more than 10,000 disabled individuals with wraparound services for workforce re-entry for nearly 30 years, most recently focusing on helping disabled veterans in our community. The local nonprofit will be hosting a special tribute and fundraiser for disabled veterans on July 30, including a "Combat Boots and Lace" fashion show featuring disabled veteran models. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Operation Confidence Turning Point Housing project for homeless disabled veterans. Live Nation helps lift burden of student debt with new employee benefits program
Chamber member Live Nation is taking employee perks to a new level. The entertainment giant began working with tech startup Tuition.io this month to help employees pay down student debt as an additional employee benefit. Employees working for the company for more than six months can now take advantage of the program that will match contributions of up to $100 monthly, or $1,200 a year, up to $6,000. LEARN MORE.

has launched an effort to educate families about the importance of saving for higher education. ScholarShare recently partnered with Toys R Us and Babies R Us retail stores throughout California to offer Gift of College gift cards to make it easier for families to open and contribute to ScholarShare 529 college savings accounts. As the first state plan to offer such a gift card, ScholarShare sees this as a new way of easing the burden and worry for families who still have hope for achieving a better way of life made possible by a higher education. With their program Technology Bridge to Education & Employment, Los Angeles OIC
makes it their mission to close the technology access gap for L.A.'s low-income residents. For just $149, they provide low-income residents with a refurbished computer containing current software to take home, giving them the tools they need to be competitive and successful. Latest lender ranking report shows small businesses can bank on Wells Fargo
The Los Angeles District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration released their FY2016 lender ranking report this week, showing Chamber Member Wells Fargo at the top of the list with more than $175 million in capital lent. Wells Fargo also leads the country as the most active SBA lender. The Chamber congratulates Wells Fargo for their success in providing access to capital that helps small businesses succeed financially, and thank them for their contributions to the L.A. business community.

Cal State L.A. brings higher education to the heart of downtown L.A.
Chamber member Cal State L.A. celebrated another milestone in its mission to bring affordable, quality postsecondary education to L.A last week, with the grand opening of its Downtown L.A. campus. The event featured elected officials including County Supervisor Hilda Solis, Assemblymembers Ed Chau and Jimmy Gomez, and Councilmember Jose Huizar. University President and Chamber Board Member William Covino did the official ribbon cutting. "We must be as innovative and dynamic in our approach to education in the city we call home. It's our responsibility to do more. That's why we're here," said President Covino. The 21,000-square-feet, state-of-the-art facility is located at West 8th Street and South Grand Avenue. Empowered Gifts, a local nonprofit for unemployed women, provides a hand up to the disadvantaged and domestically abused women of Los Angeles. By offering skills-based training and financial literacy education that culminates in a hand-bag presentation ceremony, they work together with underprivileged women towards the end-goal of securing employment. engineering firms that volunteered their services to transport ET-94, the last flight-qualified external tank in existence, from the state of Louisiana to California. Once in California, ET-94's 16.5 mile route from Marina Del Rey through the streets of L.A. kicked off at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 and took approximately 18 hours, two hours sooner than previously anticipated. Inglewood sees touchdowns in its future

, the L.A. Area Chamber was front row for Inglewood's State of the City Address. Inglewood Mayor James Butts' annual address pointed out how bringing the NFL back to the L.A. region was a central component to the current economic growth of Inglewood. Stan Kroenke, owner of the L.A. Rams, along with team owner's representative Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, were on hand to answer questions from NBC
sportscaster Fred Roggin, about the move of the franchise back to the area. A new NFL stadium is being built in Inglewood, next to The Forum, on the site of the old Hollywood Park racetrack. Wilshire Vermont's Life-Connected Courtyard launched with presentation of winning artists in citywide competition
Last week, state and L.A. city officials joined Wilshire Vermont in Koreatown for a celebration of the opening of their Life Connected Courtyard entrance to one of the city's busiest Metro
stations. Centerpiece of the Wilshire Vermont residential and retail complex, the plaza that welcomes 25,000 visitors each day, has been revitalized in a vibrant salute to Korean art and cultural traditions. Highlight of the ribbon-cutting ceremony was the presentation of the winners of Wilshire Vermont's "Art of Life Connected" exhibition competition, which drew over 300 entries. Tesoro looks to bring Carson, Wilmington refineries together
Los Angeles Refinery is a major producer of clean fuels for the region. Tesoro has proposed the Los Angeles Refinery Integration and Compliance (LARIC) project, for which the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR)
was recently released. The Chamber supports
the South Coast Air Quality Management District's DEIR and Tesoro's application for the project. The proposed integration of the refinery's adjacent Carson and Wilmington operations will provide economic and environmental benefits for the region. Kaiser Permanente's new medical school to be in Pasadena
announced today that Pasadena will be the location for its new medical school, expected to open in 2020. Groundbreaking is planned for next year. The site, adjacent to the Kaiser Permanente Department of Research and Evaluation, was chosen because it is close to major freeways, public transportation options and affordable housing, according to the HMO giant. Metrolink's first of Tier 4 locomotives completed
This past week, Metrolink's first Tier 4 locomotive was completed. The state-of-the-art locomotives will reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 85 percent. Kaiser Permanente plans to open a medical school in Southern California
Member Kaiser Permanente announced Thursday its plans to open a medical school in California. While a site has not been selected by the non-profit health system, the school is expected to open in 2019. According to the recent Los Angeles Times article, "Kaiser runs hospitals and an HMO in eight states and the District of Columbia. Nearly 80 percent of its 10.2 million members are in California." United Way hosts 9th annual walk to end homelessness
United Way of Greater Los Angeles hosted its 9th Annual HomeWalk Saturday to end homelessness in L.A. County. In the past eight years, HomeWalk has raised more than $5 million to help house the homeless, and this year's event raised an additional $1.1 million with nearly 12,000 participants. As we head into Thanksgiving, we are grateful to United Way of Greater L.A. for bringing our community together to address an issue that affects all of us. Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board chief named to EBONY® Magazine 2015 Power 100 List
Ernest Wooden Jr., president and CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, has been named to the EBONY® Magazine 2015 Power 100 list, which was unveiled this week. The list salutes the achievements of African-Americans and among those honored this year are Prince, Loretta Lynch, Zendaya and Viola Davis. Wooden Jr. serves on the L.A. Area Chamber board. Movers for Meals
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is doing more than helping people move this Thanksgiving. They will be hosting a "Movers for Meals" event at the Union Station Homeless Services, serving a warm Thanksgiving meal to those in need on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The local relocation company will also present the charity with a large donation. This marks the fifth anniversary of their Movers for Meals national program, and the first annual event for the local, Chamber-member franchise in Pasadena.

Kaiser Permanente moving forward in South L.A.
Chamber member Kaiser Permanente has broken ground on a $90-million, 100,000-square-foot building at Marlton Avenue and Santa Rosalia Drive, according to the Los Angeles Times. The groundbreaking has revived hope for redeveloping Marlton Square in South Los Angeles. This comes after three decades of delays. It is scheduled to open in 2017. Read the full story.
New Earth giving formerly incarcerated youth a new start
Last week, the Chamber was proud to join L.A. County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Chamber member New Earth and their supporters in celebrating the launch of the New Earth Arts and Leadership Center, the only full-service center serving formerly incarcerated youth in Culver City and the surrounding areas. The comprehensive re-entry center includes educational programs, a career-training center, jobs training, a vocal music studio, and other services focused on life skills and leadership. Chamber member, Port of Long Beach, had its most successful quarter in its 104-year history. Additionally in September, the Port of Long Beach moved enough cargo volume to achieve its busiest quarter, signaling a return to pre-recession trade levels. Read the full article.
Port of Los Angeles Advances Clean-energy solar power projects
Chamber member, the Port of Los Angeles has entered a long- term agreement with Hecate Energy Harborside LLC to build, operate, and maintain photovoltaic solar power systems that will generate electricity at multiple site locations within the Port. The PV Systems will feed clean energy to the utility grid operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Read the full press release.
Xerox CEO is the recipient of the John Wooden leadership award at UCLA Anderson
Ursula Burns, Xerox chairman and CEO, was the recipient of the 2015 John Wooden Global Leadership Award Tuesday from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. On accepting her award, Burns said, “I am humbled to be included in this list, all of whom I know. It’s an amazing honor to have them speak so highly of me. I always say I just do regular work… I happen to do great regular work,” she said with a smile, and added, “in a great company.” Read the full story.

Chamber member, Smart & Final, one of the longest continuously operating food retailers in the U.S., celebrated the grand opening of Smart & Final Extra, warehouse and market last week in Compton. The grand opening will mark the company’s first “Extra” warehouse in the Hub City. The Chamber joined City officials and Smart & Final executives in the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Atkins, the Chamber and a large coalition of local government officials, business leaders and transportation advocates stood on the Chamber steps Friday to address why new infrastructure funding is imperative to the health of California. South Park BID celebrates ten years with art tour
South Park Business Improvement District celebrated its 10th anniversary by inviting the public to a free art tour on Tuesday. The BID, along with the Do Art Foundation and the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles, featured a tour of the neighborhood’s public artworks with a street festival that included live music and a number of artists, including Downtown muralist Kent Twichell. AAMS to discuss breakthrough at upcoming conference
New member, Academy of Applied Myofunctional Sciences, will gather over 30 experts from around the world to meet for the first time in the U.S. to present a breakthrough in medicine from the use of Myofunctional Therapy. Recent research shows that Myofunctional Therapy has shown efficacy with health issues such as sleep apnea, orthodontic and dental problems, digestive disorders, tinnitus and many more. Bobrick's opens new headquarters
On Tuesday, the Chamber, along with L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and Councilman Paul Krekorian, joined member Bobrick Washroom Equipment, Inc. officially open their new 100,000 square foot headquarters, manufacturing, and distribution facility in North Hollywood, three blocks from its previous location where they manufactured soap dispensers for over 50 years in its 100 year history as an L.A.-based company. Advocating together, seeing results together
Thanks to you, our members, joining the Chamber on ACCESS trips and speaking up on issues vital to the economic growth of the L.A. region, our stances on important policies continue to pay off. A great example of this occurred Tuesday when Metro received $100 million in federal funds for a regional connector project. This federal funding represents the second installment of funds disbursed for this project, consistent with the FFGA that committed a total of $669.9 million for this project. The Regional Connector has also received a commitment from the USDOT for a $160 million low interest Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan. Visit Metro's website.

BierBeisl Imbiss restaurant and bakery was officially welcomed to downtown L.A. with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by BBI Chef/Owner Bernhard Mairinger and attended by Councilmember José Huizar; Blair Beston, president of the Historic Core; Patti Berman of the Downtown L.A. Neighborhood Council; David Eads, executive vice president of the LA Area Chamber of Commerce; and noted artist Jenny Okun (not shown in photo below), who unveiled her dramatic art installation along the interior of the historic Spring Arcade building. A reception followed featuring Austrian sausages and Viennese sweets plus European beers and wines.

LACI wins grant in SBA Growth Accelerator Fund Competition
On Wednesday, Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, presented a check for Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s LaKretz Innovation Campus’ win in the SBA’s Growth Accelerator Fund Competition, applauding LACI’s efforts working with small businesses and green job creation. The City of L.A. was then awarded the “Dream Big” Award in the SBA’s “Startup in a Day” Program, a grant which the City will use to build an open-source web portal aimed at streamlining business licensing and registration, enabling that process to take place in under 24 hours. Grifols and Cal State L.A. launch Grifols Summer Science Academy
In partnership, Grifols and Cal State L.A. launched a two-week summer science academy to inspire and encourage high school students to pursue careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields. The Garfield High School students worked in campus laboratories under the direction of Grifols professionals and University faculty members. The last program day included a graduation event, with special guest speaker LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis and the symbolic white coat ceremony.

LA Convention Center exceeds revenue and operational expectations at close of its financial year
The LA Convention Center announced Wednesday that, under AEG Facilities' management, it had an operational profit of over $4.1 million for fiscal yeah 2014-2015, exceeding expectations for the second consecutive year. Read the full press release.
CAL State L.A. to open campus downtown
Cal State L.A. will open a new downtown Los Angeles campus in 2016, offering undergraduate and graduate programs at the site, as well as professional development and certificate programs. The 24,000 student university, whose main campus is located four miles east of downtown, has signed a lease for 21,000 square feet at West 8th Street and South Grand Avenue.

LAUSD Rookie of Year Teachers to be honored at Dodgers game
Twenty-three teachers from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) have been named Rookies of the Year for the 2014-15 school year. This was the inaugural year for the LAUSD Rookie of the Year program. More than 920 first-year teachers were employed for the 2014-2015 school year. Eighty-seven first year teachers were nominated as Rookies of the Year by LAUSD school site administrators and new teacher support providers. Winners were selected by a committee.
